Missouri Inspection FAQs

Does Missouri require a safety inspection every year?

Yes. Missouri requires an annual safety inspection for all registered vehicles. The inspection must be performed by a licensed Missouri inspection station like Benchmark Auto Repair. You'll need a valid inspection sticker to renew your vehicle registration.

Do I need an emissions test in St. Louis?

Yes, if your vehicle is registered in St. Louis City or St. Louis County, you're required to pass an OBD II emissions test in addition to the safety inspection. Vehicles registered in other Missouri counties may only need the safety inspection — check with your county.

What does Missouri safety inspection check?

Missouri safety inspections check brakes, steering, suspension, lights (headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals), horn, windshield wipers, mirrors, tires, seat belts, and exhaust system. The inspector looks for anything that could make the vehicle unsafe to operate on public roads.

What happens if my car fails inspection?

We'll give you a written report of what failed and a repair estimate. If you choose to have us perform the repairs, reinspection is included at no extra charge. If you take it elsewhere for repairs, you'll need to return for a paid reinspection.

How long does a Missouri state inspection take?

Safety inspections typically take 30–45 minutes. If emissions testing is included, add another 15–20 minutes. We recommend booking online to minimize wait time.
